Describe an ordinary day
The most useful residential brief often begins with familiar routines. Think about arriving home, preparing food, working, hosting and putting things away. Include the objects that need a home, not only the furniture you would like to buy. Storage becomes more effective when it follows behaviour.
Review materials in context
Look at samples together and under the intended lighting conditions. A stone, timber or fabric can change character beside another finish. Discuss cleaning, touch and the way surfaces age. A coherent material palette is about relationships and maintenance as much as colour.
Keep the plan personal
Images can start a conversation, but they should not replace it. Identify what appeals in a reference: a view, a proportion, a texture or a feeling of privacy. Translating that quality into your own building is more useful than reproducing a room designed for somebody else.
